Integrating a Magento store with an ERP, CRM or PIM system is one of the most common causes of budget and deadline overruns in e-commerce projects. Not because it is technically impossible – but because both parties (client and contractor) often underestimate its complexity at the quote stage.
Why integrations are hard
Every ERP system is slightly different – even the same product (SAP, Comarch ERP, Subiekt) in different companies is often heavily configured for individual needs. What looks like standard in the documentation turns out to be non-standard in practice. An API often does not exist or is incomplete – a file export/import or custom connector is needed.
Data in ERP and Magento have different structures. A product in ERP is one record with attributes. A product in Magento is a hierarchy: simple product, configurable product, variants, EAV attributes. Mapping between these structures requires analysis and business decisions, not just programming.
What to look for in a contract with a contractor
The scope should specify: which direction data flows (ERP to Magento, Magento to ERP, or both), how often synchronisation occurs (real-time, hourly, once daily), who is the master record on data conflict, what happens when synchronisation fails. Missing answers to these questions in the specification is a risk of disputes and additional costs.
Typical traps
Integration with an ERP that “will be changed soon” – the project starts under the old system and finishes under the new one, the entire integration has to be rewritten. No test environment on the ERP side – integration tested only on production, every error affects business operations. Overly optimistic assumptions about data quality in the ERP – product data accumulated over years often contains errors, duplicates and inconsistencies that need cleaning before migration.
